Associated Charities is established.

1879

Originally the Family Welfare Society, it is incorporated in January 1882. The organization’s purpose is to coordinate the work of Boston’s various Protestant charitable organizations. Its motto is, “Not alms but a friend,” and its volunteers are said to believe in “elevation by contact.” Robert Treat Paine is the first president and serves in that office until 1904. The organization subsequently becomes part of today’s Boston Foundation.
